Since 1912,

Our family has been tuning and servicing pianos for concert halls, professional musicians, places of Worship, schools and homes. Our family business started with Raymond Ottinger, who was trained by the Wurlitzer Piano Company in 1912. Ray quickly established himself as one of the foremost piano technicians in the Western New York area. As he began to close out his career his son-in-law Gordon Griffiths began to fill in serving many places of worship, music teachers and homes. In 1982, Jonathan Griffiths, Gordon’s son, completed the Chautauqua Institution’s Piano Tuning School under the instruction of Arthur Briggs of Jamestown. He then went on to serve as a tuner apprentice for Rogers Pianos and Clocks under the skillful care of Roger Pfohl until demands from his personal tuning business allowed him to go out on his own and continue the family tradition.

One of life’s small satisfying moments is sitting down and playing on an acoustic piano which is working at its peak both mechanically and tonally. The player merges with a mechanical beast to enliven its voice and thereby stir the souls of all who hear. This moment is transcendent. To have played even a small role to such an end is why I love tuning and working on pianos.
